Recommended Tools and Software for System Administrators

Below you will find a list of tools and products recommended for System Administrators.

Virtualization

VMware Fusion* is a desktop virtualization program that let’s you run almost any operating system on a Mac. It’s a great tool for developers and system administrators to use, as it allows you to keep the dev environment the same as production.

It also has a snapshot feature which is useful when creating Ansible playbooks because it allows you to restore the state of the operating system to before a playbook was run with the click of a button.

VMware Fusion is a native macOS program which makes the user interface familiar to Mac users unlike some of the free products that are available.

VMware Workstation* is a desktop virtualization program that let’s you run almost any operating system on a Windows or Linux machine. It’s similar to VMware Fusion but for Windows and Linux users.

VMware vSphere* vSphere is a server virtualization platform that delivers essential services for the modern hybrid cloud. It is now rearchitected with native Kubernetes into an open platform that enables you to run existing enterprise applications alongside modern containerized applications in a unified manner.

Configuration Management and Automation

Ansible is an open-source software provisioning, configuration management, and application-deployment tool enabling infrastructure as code. It’s agent-less, which means you don’t have to install any software on the servers being configured and it’s idempotent which means playbooks are safe to be run multiple times.

Cloud Hosting Providers

Amazon AWS is the market leader in cloud computing and has a huge amount of managed/unmanaged services to choose from.

DigitalOcean* is an American cloud infrastructure provider headquartered in New York City with data centers worldwide. They have one of the easiest to use websites with good documentation.

Google Cloud Google Cloud Platform (GCP), is a suite of cloud computing services that runs on the same infrastructure that Google uses internally for its end-user products, such as Google Search, Gmail and YouTube.

Microsoft Azure is a cloud computing service created by Microsoft for building, testing, deploying, and managing applications and services through Microsoft-managed data centers.
