10 Reasons Why TikTok Won’t Let You Follow Anyone

The instant gratification and endless entertainment of TikTok make it the most fun and addictive social media platform. However, the fun quickly comes to an end when you experience performance and stability errors or when you can’t follow the accounts you’re interested in. So, why won’t TikTok let me follow anyone?

TikTok won’t let you follow anyone if you follow up to 200 accounts in a day as that is the daily limit. There is a lifetime limit of 10,000 accounts you can follow on TikTok, and the app won’t let you follow anyone else when you reach it. TikTok can also stop you from following accounts if you follow and like accounts too quickly or if there is a server error.

In some cases, you may simply need to update the app or reinstall TikTok to fix the problem. Follow along as we explore why TikTok won’t let you follow anyone and see what you can do about it.

Why Is TikTok Not Allowing Me to Follow Anyone?

1. Account Privacy

TikTok may not let you follow certain accounts because of their privacy settings. You cannot follow private accounts and may see a message that says, “You can’t follow this account due to privacy settings of the user”. In that case, there is nothing you can do about it.

However, if every account that you try to follow says that, then it’s a sign that something else is wrong.

2. They Blocked You

You cannot follow accounts that blocked you on TikTok. Their account shouldn’t pop up when you search for them on the app, but it may be due to an error. Even if the account appears on the app, you won’t be able to follow them or interact with their videos if they block you.

3. TikTok Server Error

Server errors can occur on TikTok due to internal problems within the app. They can also occur if you access the app on a weak private server. TikTok’s servers go down occasionally, and most recently it went down for 39 minutes which restricted access for millions of users. In this case, you simply must wait to follow accounts and like their videos, until the servers go back up.

4. You Reached the Following Limit

TikTok only lets you follow 10,000 accounts. Once you hit 10,000 accounts, you cannot follow anyone else until you unfollow some accounts.

Go through the list of accounts you follow and unfollow the ones that don’t post often or that you rarely interact with. This will let you follow more accounts.

5. TikTok Bot Algorithm

TikTok has a built-in algorithm that works to keep bots off the app. They analyze your account activity such as how often people follow others and like posts. If they suspect suspicious activity, they will flag your account as a bot and restrict your access or delete the account.

TikTok users can also report you as a bot if they believe you are a bot. This is common when you rapidly like a lot of their past posts in quick succession as it can be suspicious.

6. You Have Been Shadowbanned

You may have heard of famous TikTok accounts getting “shadowbanned”, but it can happen to anyone. Also known as “TikTok jail”, a shadowban is when your account gets unexpectedly restricted without being banned. This can restrict your access to like, follow, view, and share videos on TikTok.

In some cases, you may still be able to use TikTok normally, but your likes and follows won’t register within the app. Shadowbans typically only last 1-4 days as mentioned in the comments on this Reddit post, but it is still quite frustrating. However, it can last up to 2 weeks.

7. Following Accounts Too Quickly

TikTok will only let you follow 200 accounts per day. If you have reached the limit, you won’t be able to follow anyone else for another 24 hours. TikTok limits how many accounts you can follow per day to prevent spamming and bot activity.

8. Outdated App

TikTok users can experience performance issues when the app is outdated. This includes videos failing to load, likes not appearing, and the inability to follow other users. Luckily, you can fix this in most cases if you update the app.

In some cases, TikTok may not let you follow anyone or like videos after a recent update. Unfortunately, you may have to wait until the next update or simply uninstall and reinstall the app to see if it works again.

9. Connectivity Issues

Like any app, TikTok won’t work properly if you have connectivity issues. These issues can occur if your Wi-Fi connection goes out or if you don’t have cellular data when you don’t have a Wi-Fi connection. You can tell this is the problem if the app works as usual once again when you reconnect to Wi-Fi or use cellular data.

Some Redditors have experienced a problem where they connect to a different Wi-Fi network than usual and experience issues when they return to their primary network. In that case, you may need to reinstall the app or log out and sign back in.

10. Corrupted Files

Whether you use TikTok on your PC or smartphone, you may have corrupted files on your device. This can stop any app from working properly, and that includes TikTok. In that case, the best option is to clear your cache on the device to remove the corrupted files.

Once you’ve done this, simply log out of the app and sign back in to see if you can follow other accounts again.

TikTok Won’t Let me Like Videos

If TikTok won’t let you like videos, it’s likely because you reached the daily limit. TikTok limits how many videos you can like per day to crack down on bot activity. Some people use bots on TikTok to “farm” likes so they can get more followers.

Others don’t use bots and instead, simply like as many videos as possible in a short period to increase their follower count. This is known as “spam liking”, and TikTok discourages this behavior. Because of that, you can only “like” 500 videos per day on the app. After that, TikTok won’t let you like any other videos until the following day.

So, Why Can’t I Follow People on TikTok?

You can’t follow people on TikTok if you reach the daily limit of 200 follows. This can also happen if you follow 10,000 accounts as that is the maximum limit. TikTok will also prevent you from following people if there is a server error, connectivity issues, or if your phone or computer has corrupted files.
